Spring Cleaning Inspiration

If this rainy Chicago weather is bumming you out, why not take it as an opportunity to do a sweep of your home? I always find decluttering and cleaning to have a positive effect on my mind. Getting organized can have a tremendous impact on your focus, productivity, and ability to relax. And if you have ever sold your home with me, you understand the prep work required.

Since I recenty moved, I went through the process myself! In addition to donating huge piles of clothing, I also got into upcycling by selling hidden gems from my closet on Poshmark, selling some furniture items on Facebook Marketplace, and bringing old clothing items to the Patagonia Store for their Worn Wear program, which resulted in a nice credit (that I applied to new fresh threads, of course). You can also try ThredUp for trading in clothes (especially children’s) for cash.

One person’s trash is another one’s treasure! Please consider recycling your old clothes and belongings- you will also help the environment while you are at it. There are many great organizations that make it so easy to give your old clothes, furniture, and housewares a new home, where they will be greatly appreciated. There are so many people struggling these days, letting go of things you no longer need can be a gift to others.

Clothing, furniture, & home goods

Family Tree Resale:
They accept clothing and home goods, and partner with other local non-profits such as Common Pantry and Refugee One to provide vouchers for their clients.

Brown Elephant:
They have resale shop locations in Lakeview, Andersonville, and Oak Park, and all proceeds support LGBTQ+ healthcare and fund care for the uninsured and under-insured at Howard Brown Health. They accept clothing and most home goods, and they will pick up furniture from your home!

Salvation Army:
Recently I had the opportunity to hear a firsthand account of someone who had lost their business during the Great Recession, spiraled into alcoholism and homelessness, and found rehabilitation through the Salvation Army here in Chicago. They are now thriving in their career. Meeting someone who is a success story made me realize how impactful this organization truly is.

Furniture Pick-Ups

Chicago Furniture Bank:
Honest Junk Company:
Brown Elephant:

Cleaning out the kitchen?
You can donate unopened, unexpired food items to Common Pantry, and they will take those pesky unopened takeout utensils also!

If you happen to be downsizing or cleaning out a family estate, I know some fabulous professionals that I can refer to you who will coordinate the whole process for you. Please feel free to contact me for a recommendation!
